Beijing New Qianmen Metro Station Beijing,China
The New Qianmen subway station is the Phase 3 of Beijing Metro Line 8, which will form a experiential culture museum in conjunction with the new Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall directly aboveground.
How to develop the TOD integration design in combining planning exhibition hall with subway station from function point of view, and how to integrate the history of Beijing as millennium ancient capital and the urban generation from the context of culture and urban planning point of view, are become the questions and direction to our design evolution.
A picture of "Metropolitan Beijing" first brought us inspiration. The Qianmen (Gate) is located on the central axis of Beijing, this central axis starts from the Yongding Gate in the outer city and passes through the inner city Zhengyang Gate, Zhonghua Gate, Tianan Gate, Duan Gate, Wu Gate, Taihe Gate, through the Hall of Supreme Harmony, and the Hall of Central Harmony, Baohe Hall, Ganqing Palace, Kunning Palace, Shenwu Gate, crossed the Wansong Mountain Wanchun Pavilion, Shouhuang Temple, Drum Tower, directly to the center of the clock tower, connected to the Four Cities, namely the Outer City, the Inner City, the Imperial City and The Forbidden City, like the backbone of Beijing, is a strong part of the planning of Beijing.
The most familiar on the central axis is the cascade of gates. Through them, we seem to be able to walk into history and look inon the vicissitudes and changes of the ancient capital.
The design scheme is inspired by the sequence of gates on the central axis of Beijing. The abstraction of the gates of the city's historical context and urban memory is hierarchically arranged in the station space, forming as a gateway to the planning exhibition hall and frontage to Qianmen. We combined the tall vaults in the design to open up the visual and circulation links between the platform level, the ticket hall level and the transit.
The gray bricks, copper and detail elements contains the memory of Qianmen, and its unique feature of multinational culture background. At the same time, the axis of gates performs as a strong sense of guidance makes people feel like a time tunnel, which travels between ancient and modern, and narrates a concentrated image of Beijing city from space to time.
In addition, the development of the Beijing subway itself is part of the development of urban planning. Combining it with the urban planning exhibition hall should be extremely appropriate and natural, with a focus on the way of integration. After all, the two parts are individuals operating independently.
We designed the exhibition hall layer as a display gallery and become the extension of the planning exhibition hall; the station hall floor is partially expanded upwards, so that part of the exhibition area of the planning exhibition hall is exposed to the station hall, and the audience and passengers have visual connection in this space, appears a inside out feature.
